POP 88 #44 – Another Non-Stop Trance Remix

You’ll notice I sound a bit different in this episode. In fact, I’ve got a guest DJ who kindly asked if he could mix this episode for me. And seeing as how I haven’t exactly learned how to spin, virtual or otherwise, it probably would be something fun and different for you all to listen to.

Please welcome DJ PLo from KSCU 103.3FM in Santa Clara who can also be heard at OMGKPOP.com Wednesday Evenings 9pm PST. Leave him some love in the comments and check out his site at www.lopeter.com.

Birthday Wishes from guess who?

So my friend Will-W was given a pass to see the Wonder Girls this past weekend when they played at the Mod Club in Toronto. Knowing my love for Kpop, this is what he managed to get me for my birthday.

He’s THE.BEST!

POP #42 – The House of Suh

While there were a lot of really fascinating documentaries shown at this year’s Hot Docs World Documentary Festival in Toronto this past week, one of the more stand out ones was “The House of Suh”. Directed by Iris Shim, the documentary shows the rise and demise of a Korean-American family that was so intriguing, it was made into a TV film called, “Bad To the Bone” in 1997 starring Kristy Swanson and Jeremy London.

I was able to sit down with Iris on the last day of the festival on Mother’s Day where we chatted over coffee about her film, identity and the state of the Asian American film industry in general. The podcast focuses just on the House of Suh but I’m thinking of releasing other parts of the conversation in my next podcast since we spoke for over an hour.

POP 88 #40 – Non-Stop Trance Mix

Grab Your Glowsticks!

This was at the request of Cassandra who wanted to hear a para-trance/ eurobeat show. Since there are so many forms of trance music and everyone has their own opinion on it, I came up with this non-stop mix. Personally, I’m more of a house and club beat girl.

Course, just hours after I finished the mix down, I got inundated with remixes for After School’s new track Bang! (You must check out the drumline – seriously hot!) I’m still waiting around for a decent SNSD, Run Devil Run remix to also be released.

Most of the remixes played can be found via YouTube, so you’ll have to do some legwork, but I will have the playlist after the jump.

My next episode, #41, I’ll be talking to Ellie Lee, from AATheory.com and Seoulbeats about her new project on racism. Stay tuned!

Forgot about this …

So, before I post episode 40 – the non-stop trance mix (have you bought your glowsticks yet? :P ) I was listening to DJ Choboo on the SRC @OMGKpop where she played a request for 1TYM’s Hot Duhgo, an old skool K-Hip hop track.

When I first started w. the SRC I somehow volunteered myself to mix one of our dj’s at the time, DJ CeeJay’s fan rendition of that song. She had written this entire rap in English and it was soo good I felt the mix she gave it didn’t do the song the justice. Me, I actually know VERY little about music production, I don’t play an instrument and only got to Level 2 in piano. I just know what sounds good and flows and I guess I got rhythm. I figured I should try and see what I can come up with in my limited knowledge of actual music production.

Anyways, this is what I ended up with:

There are bits of my voice in the background here and there, but it’s pretty much all Ceejay’s voice layered at different pitches. It’s really too bad there isn’t a clean instrumental of the track or else the sound would’ve been much clearer, but it works.

What do you think?

POP 88 – #38 – Last Train Home

As promised here is the first of 3 new episodes to make up for my getting busy/ coming down with pneumonia.

It was a slight challenge getting a hold of Director Lixin Fan. After all, his prestigious award-winning documentary film LAST TRAIN HOME had him being invited to festivals left, right and center. Not bad for a Canadian film and a debut feature for this young director from China.

The podcast is of course the edited, film focused version, but I’ll make the entire Skype interview (a full 30+ mins.) available should people be interested. We went more into depth about the Zhang family as well as freedom of expression and censorship while working within China. And then we also talked about food and his thoughts upon landing in Toronto (Scarborough) when he first came.

Linkage:
LAST TRAIN HOME – Official Website
Toronto Reel Asian Festival – FUNDRAISER – LAST TRAIN HOME Screening event – Friday, February 26th, 2010
LAST TRAIN HOME - Reel Asian Fundraiser
